Bengaluru bans use of drinking water for other purposes as water crisis rages

Bengaluru‘s water crisis appears to have reached a critical point. Amid severe chaos, the city’s Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has banned the use of potable water for other purposes, reports said on March 13.

The use of drinking water in swimming pools is now prohibited, the order said. Any violation of the order will attract a penalty of Rs 5,000, it was announced.

The order will come into force from March 15.

In response to the water shortage issue, the state unit of the BJP staged a protest at Freedom Park, urging the state government to take action. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya criticized the Congress government for releasing water to Tamil Nadu instead of addressing the water crisis in Bengaluru. He claimed that neither Chief Minister Siddaramaiah nor Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar visited the water-stressed areas of the city to understand the difficulties faced by the people.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has accused the BJP of playing politics with the water shortage issue in Bengaluru. He said the BJP should approach the central government and seek permission for the Mahadayi and Mekedaatu projects before protesting against the state government.

Shivakumar said that there is no scarcity of water in Bengaluru and that it is the BJP’s actions that have created the perception of scarcity. He reiterated that the state government is committed to providing water to Bengaluru and is working on multiple fronts to address the crisis.According to Bangalore Water Supply & Sewerage Board chairperson Dr V Ram Prasath Manohar, the city requires 150 litres of water per person per day, with a total quantity of 200,000 million litres per day for Bengaluru’s population of 14 million. Currently, Bengaluru receives 10,450 million litres per day from the Cauvery river, which is sufficient until July. Manohar assured the public that the government is taking steps to ensure the water needs of the city are met.
