Wheelchair basketball National Junior Championships held in Henrico

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) Junior Championships took place this weekend at the Henrico Sports and Events Center.

The NWBA Junior National Championships took place from Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7 at the Henrico Sports and Events Center, with the No. 1 seed Lakeshore Lakers taking home the first place win on Sunday.

The No. 16 seed Fairfax Falcons from Virginia placed 16th after losing their tournament game against the No. 15 seed WASA Marquette Eagles, with the final score of 56-62.

The No. 12 seed Brooks Bullsharks from Florida played a close game against the No. 13 seed RHI Racers on the first day of the tournament on Friday, but lost with a final score of 42-44. However, they didn’t let the loss bring them down as they went on to win two more games in the tournament.

“We knew we were going to be competing against higher competition, so we kind of just came in knowing that we’re going to try our best, and we did just that,” Bullsharks spokesperson Rose Parker said.

The Bullsharks placed 13th in the competition after they won their final game against the No. 11 seed Dallas Junior Mavericks Blue with a final score of 46-44 on Sunday.

Bullsharks spokesperson Summer Petrick said the team has been traveling competitively since 2016, but this was their first time traveling to the Richmond area as the national game was hosted at the Henrico Sports and Events Center.

“This weekend was great. We had two seniors on our team, so it was a very big deal for them,” Parker said about the Bullsharks winning their final game. “Our team, they worked really hard to be here. They’ve grown a lot.”

The NWBA Adult Championships will take place next weekend at the sports center in Henrico County on Friday, April 12 through Sunday, April 14.
