Toyota is warning owners of several pickups and SUVs of a safety issue that could see their vehicles continue to move forward, even when they’re in neutral.
The auto maker has recalled 280,000 Toyota Tundra, Sequoia and Lexus LX 600 vehicles in the U.S. Notifications will go out in late April, but concerned owners can contact their dealer or enter their vehicle ID number at toyota.com/recall.
“Certain parts of the transmission may not immediately disengage when the vehicle is shifted to the neutral position,” the company said in a notification. “This can allow some engine power to continue to be transferred to the wheels and can allow the vehicle to inadvertently creep forward at a low speed when it is on a flat surface and no brakes are applied, leading to an increased risk of a crash.”
The recall applies to vehicles manufactured between 2022 and 2024.
Separately, Toyota also announced a recall on 19,000 certain Mirai and Lexus LS, LC, ES models in North America, made between 2023 and 2024. Those vehicles have a software problem that may result in “the rearview image may not display[ing] within the period of time required by certain US safety regulations after the driver shifts the vehicle into reverse, increasing the risk of a crash while backing the vehicle.”
Also, 4,000 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid vehicles are also being recalled over issues with the head restraints on rear fold-down seats which could “increase the risk of injury during certain collisions.”
The recall follows a warning last month by the company to owners of thousands of older Corolla, Matrix, RAV4 vehicles to stop driving their cars as the Takata air bag inflators they were equipped with are at risk of exploding and hurling shrapnel.
