Former J&K chief minister Abdullah, the party’s Lok Sabha candidate from Baramulla, urged the ECI to take action against the “unjust move”, which he said was designed to “create obstacles” in his election campaign.
“We have received a letter informing us about cancellation of permission. On one hand BJP claims that the situation has changed in J&K, but when it is about the election campaign, they create obstacles because we are fighting elections against representatives of the BJP here,” said Abdullah.
He said the letter received from the superintendent of police in Sopore was silent about the reason as to why the party’s campaign rallies and meetings should be rescheduled. “This denial of permission is aimed at preventing the party from effectively carrying out the campaign… it is a direct assault on democracy… and this selective targeting is a violation of our fundamental rights,” said the letter.

The police had directed the NC to reschedule important campaign rallies in northern Kashmir scheduled between May 8-18, according to the party. “May 18 is the last day of campaigning in Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency. When will we hold the rallies then?” asked Tanvir Sadiq of the NC. Abdullah urged the ECI to issue orders to the superintendent of police in Sopore area of northern Kashmir to grant permission immediately to uphold the integrity of the electoral process. “Failing to address the said matter immediately and swiftly will only serve to undermine the credibility of the electoral process and erode public trust in the institution,” he said in the letter.
