Indian-origin Sikh builder shot dead in Canada’s Edmonton

A builder and head of the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Canada’s Edmonton, Boota Singh Gill, was shot dead on Monday after he received the bullets several times, according to Canadian news agencies. EPS homicide investigators are leading the investigation of Gill’s murder case.

Southwest Branch patrol officers responded to the report of a shooting in the area of Cavanagh Boulevard SW and Cherniak Way SW. Upon police arrival three injured males were located. EMS responded and determined two males, a 49-year-old and a 57-year-old were deceased, and a 51-year-old male was seriously injured,” said Edmonton Police in its official press release.

After the incident, the police released an advisory for the citizens living in the area, asking them to steer clear of Cavanagh Blvd SW and 30 Avenue SW.

“Police are asking citizens to avoid the area of Cavanagh Blvd SW and 30 Avenue SW while police investigate a shooting that occurred in the residential area around noon. There are no immediate concerns for public safety at this time and responding officers have secured the scene,” stated the official statement of police.

The builder had received extortion calls before he was shot dead, according to media reports. Before Gill, many others living in Canada were targeted by such calls. Commenting on the issue, the government expressed concern over reports that some members of the Indian community in Canada had received “extortion calls”.

“People getting extortion calls, especially Indian nationals, is a matter of serious concern,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said answering queries at the regular media briefing.”We (India and Canada) have several issues to discuss. There was an issue about a temple which was attacked. The Canadian police then thereafter went into the investigation of the temple premises, and the person who had intruded it later turned out, and they issued a statement that the person was of unsound mind. So there are these issues that keep happening…,” Jaiswal said.
