West Bengal Governor directs state govt to remove Education Minister from cabinet for violating MCC
The order to Mamata Banerjee’s government comes after a political meeting that was held in Gour Banga University under the leadership and presence of Bratya Basu, Minister of Education of West Bengal with other Ministers, MPs, MLAs and political leaders on March 30.
“The Chancellor and Governor of West Bengal has directed the state government to take action against the erring Minister who has deliberately violated the election code of conduct, including his removal from the Cabinet,” the statement of Raj Bhavan read.
The MCC is a set of conventions agreed upon by all stakeholders and imposed during elections. Its objective is to keep the campaigning, polling and counting process orderly, clean and peaceful and check any abuse of state machinery and finances by the party in power.

Tension between Basu and Bose intensified over the past few days.
Days after Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu labelled him as ‘insane’ amid discussions on the operational confusion in state-run universities, Governor C V Ananda Bose on Thursday said such remarks came after he had already endorsed names for interim vice-chancellors, as proposed by the minister. The governor said that Basu’s allegations was an attempt to tarnish his relationship with his constitutional colleague, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
“Minister Shri Bratya Basu has called Governor ‘insane’ and suffering from Alzheimer. This is at a time when as desired by the HCM, HG has accepted all the 4 names suggested by the Minister for appointment as interim VCs of the vacant universities,” the Raj Bhavan posted on X.
