Agni 5 missile: Mission Divyastra: PM Modi congratulates DRDO for 1st flight test of indigenously developed Agni-5 missile through MIRV tech

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated DRDO scientists for carrying out the first flight test of Agni-5 missile with MIRV technology.

“Proud of our DRDO scientists for Mission Divyastra, the first flight test of indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology,” he said through a post on social media platform X.

MIRV technology refers to an exoatmosphere ballistic missile payload comprising multiple warheads, each with the ability to target distinct locations. This concept is commonly linked with intercontinental ballistic missiles that carry thermonuclear warheads, although it is not exclusively limited to them.

The Agni-5 happens to be the most advanced missile in the Agni series, because of its navigation and guidance, warhead and engine. The missile has been made in a manner that after reaching the peak of its trajectory it will head down to the earth’s surface, towards the target, with increased speed due to the gravitational pull.

The other Agni series missiles in India’s armoury are the Agni-1 with 700km range, Agni-2 with 2,000km range, Agni-3 and Agni-4 with 2,500km to over 3,500km range.
