Fasten your seatbelts as China Southern Airlines is launching China’s longest commercial flight from the southern city of Shenzhen to Mexico City. This will surpass the airline’s previous longest route from Guangzhou to New York city. While the latter covers a distance of 12871 kms, the former will cover a distance of 14147 kms, one way, as per a report on CNN.
This flight from Shenzhen to Mexico city will be a 16 hour long non stop journey and the distance is expected to be covered in 16 hours. The departure from Shenzhen will be on every Tuesday and Saturday. This service will commence from May 11.
The journey back to Shenzhen from Mexico city though is slightly different. The total flying time is expected to be 21 hours and 21 minutes with a brief stop over at Tijuana for refueling. It will begin service on May 12 and will operate on Wednesdays and Sundays. The passengers will not be permitted to disembark during this stopover.

A report in the Shenzhen based SZ news reported that the airline will be using the services of Airbus A 350 for this journey. The details pertaining to the cost are not yet known.

This development comes even as the business relations between China and Mexico see growth. Various sectors in Mexico have received investments from China. Top electric vehicle manufacturing companies of China have invested in Mexico, inviting US scrutiny and concerns.

Presently, the longest flight operated is on the Singapore- New York route by the Singapore International Airlines. The total route is 15,332 kms. Last year, China relaxed its restrictions on international travel and arrivals following a shut down after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. China Southern Airlines launched its Guangzhou- Vancouver-Mexico city route in 2017, according to Xinhua news agency.
