Indians are extremely demanding, but are not willing to pay for anything: Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi recently spoke about the Indian market. During a conversation with Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani in Bengaluru on Thursday, he said that Indians are extremely demanding, but are not willing to pay for anything.

“India is one of the toughest markets out there. If we can succeed here, we can succeed anywhere,” he said.

Khosrowshahi also revealed that the ride-hailing company is planning to introduce low-cost service segments of two- and three-wheelers in India.

Khosrowshahi said Uber may also introduce bus services in some areas. “It is also an extraordinary opportunity for us to expand our services to a wider population. We don’t just want to be an upper-middle-class product. We want to be available to everybody,” he added

Khosrowshahi praised India’s digital public infrastructure and said that companies and governments worldwide can learn from its scale and ambition. Khosrowshahi also expressed Uber’s interest in open-source technology and the opportunities it brings to all.

Khosrowshahi also revealed how Uber changed its tactics in India after the Covid pandemic, focussing on improving the experience for drivers alongside customers.
Despite facing challenges during the lockdown, which resulted in layoffs, Uber managed to make $3 billion in profits. Over the past decade, Uber has operated in 125 cities in India and completed 3 billion trips, he revealed.

To expand its range of mobility offerings, Khosrowshahi said, Uber has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).
