Along the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay lies the Coastal Plain of Virginia. The Coastal Plain region is mostly composed of sediments derived from the erosion of the highlands of Virginia. Once upon a time, the entire region was covered in water, leaving relict fossils from Earth’s recent geologic history.
