Dominion Virginia Power Installs Solar System With Battery Storage Integration

A solar installation at Randolph-Macon College is testing a solution by becoming the state’s first fully integrated solar and battery storage site of its kind, which will help provide a steady delivery of electricity even when the sun is not shining. The project will test two unique battery technologies, along with the roof-mounted solar system, to determine its effects on the distribution system.

Dominion installed more than 265 solar panels capable of generating 50 kilowatts of electricity – enough to power about 13 homes at peak levels – on the rooftop of R-MC’s Copley Science Center. The batteries will store the energy produced by the solar panels during peak sunlight hours and discharge the solar energy during the early evening hours when the grid’s resources are more limited and the benefits are greater.
