Sanjay Nirupam claims he quit Congress before party expelled him for 6 years

Sanjay Nirupam, former Mumbai Congress chief, on Thursday claimed the political party had expelled him soon after he tendered his resignation.

“Looks like, immediately after the party received my resignation letter last night, they decided to issue my expulsion,” Sanjay Nirupam wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Good to see the such promptness,” he added.

Nirupam also said he will give a detail statement today between 11.30 to 12 pm.

On Wednesday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had approved the expulsion of Sanjay Nirupam for a period of six years following complaints of indiscipline and making anti-party statements. Congress had removed his name from the list of star campaigners due to his recent remarks against the INDIA bloc partner, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), regarding seat-sharing for the Lok Sabha election.

A former MP representing Mumbai North, Nirupam had criticised the state leadership of the Congress party after the Shiv Sena (UBT), led by Uddhav Thackeray, announced its candidates for four out of six Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai. This included the Mumbai North West seat, which Nirupam had been eyeing.

The former Congress leader had warned the Sena for taking an “extreme stand”. Nirupam suggested that the Congress party’s alliance with Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena might prove to be “self-destructive.”Nirupam had on Wednesday that that he will take the decision on April 4 whether he will remain in the Congress party or leave it.”Congress Party should not waste much energy and stationery for me. Instead, use it to save the party. Anyway, the party is going through a severe financial crisis. The period of one week that I had given has been completed today. Tomorrow I will take the decision myself,” he had said.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Gourav Vallabh on Thursday quit the party ahead of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “I am not able to feel comfortable with the directionless way in which the Congress Party is moving forward today. I can neither raise anti-Sanatan slogans nor abuse the wealth creators of the country in the morning and evening. That is why I I am resigning from all posts and primary membership of Congress Party.”
