The 68-year-old was cycling with fellow enthusiasts on Palm Beach Road in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, when he was hit by a speeding cab around 5.50 am.

According to fellow cyclists, Saini’s bicycle was struck from behind by the cab. Despite wearing a helmet, he sustained severe injuries. The incident has sparked concerns among enthusiasts and novices alike, prompting a crucial discussion on road safety measures for cyclists. Cycling, undoubtedly a fantastic way to stay fit and explore the outdoors, demands careful attention and adherence to safety guidelines to prevent unfortunate accidents.

Here are some imperative safety tips and guidelines to keep in mind while cycling on the roads:
Wear a Helmet: The importance of wearing a helmet cannot be overstated. It serves as a crucial barrier between your head and potential impact, significantly reducing the risk of head injuries in the event of a fall or collision. Ensure that your helmet fits snugly and meets safety standards.

Be Visible: Make yourself visible to other road users by wearing bright, reflective clothing, especially during low-light conditions or inclement weather. Equip your bicycle with front and rear lights, and use reflective accessories to enhance visibility from all angles.Obey Traffic Rules: Treat your bicycle as you would any other vehicle on the road. Adhere to traffic signals, signs, and lane markings, and always ride in the same direction as traffic flow. Signal your intentions clearly before turning or changing lanes to alert motorists and pedestrians.Stay Alert and Vigilant: Maintain situational awareness at all times by scanning the road ahead for potential hazards, including potholes, debris, and erratic drivers. Avoid distractions such as using mobile phones or wearing headphones, which can impair your ability to react promptly to sudden dangers.

Keep a Safe Distance: Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, especially large trucks and buses, to minimize the risk of being caught in blind spots or collisions. Give parked cars ample clearance to avoid unexpected door openings and potential accidents.

Use Hand Signals: Communicate your intentions to other road users by using hand signals to indicate turns, stops, and lane changes. Clear and consistent signaling enhances predictability and fosters mutual respect between cyclists and motorists.

Choose Safe Routes: Plan your cycling routes carefully, opting for roads with designated bike lanes or wide shoulders whenever possible. Avoid high-traffic areas and busy intersections, opting for quieter streets and dedicated cycling paths for a safer riding experience.

Maintain Your Bicycle: Regularly inspect and maintain your bicycle to ensure optimal performance and safety. Check tire pressure, brakes, gears, and other components before each ride, and address any issues promptly to prevent mechanical failures on the road.

Be Prepared for Emergencies: Carry essential tools and supplies, including a spare tube, tire levers, pump, multi-tool, and first-aid kit, to handle common mechanical problems and minor injuries on the go. Familiarize yourself with basic repair techniques and emergency procedures to mitigate risks during unforeseen circumstances.

Stay Educated and Informed: Stay updated on local cycling laws, regulations, and safety initiatives to enhance your knowledge and advocacy efforts within the cycling community. Participate in cycling safety workshops, training programs, and awareness campaigns to promote a culture of safety and responsibility among cyclists and motorists alike.
